Alfred just smiled at that, pulling the end of the horn away from the other's mouth so she had time to breathe.

"They really are," He whispered, rocking her gently.

Even if they never did reach parenthood...he was glad enough to at least have this. Despite everything though, he didn't regret being with Arthur. Even if Arthur was a man.

After all, he was the man that he loved with all of his heart. Not only that but he had chosen Arthur back just as much as Arthur had chosen him. They both knew what was to happen if they were together.

And to be honest...living the life of being married to someone he didn't love wasn't all that appealing.

Arthur allowed himself to watch Alfred gormlessly for a few more moments, trying not to think about those strong arms holding something so small and fragile as though it was the most precious thing in existence. It was making his knees all wobbly and he decided that probably wasn’t a good idea considering that he was holding William.

“When do you think Madeline will be back?”

Alfred knew that he was a strong man. He also knew that he could be rather intimidating but he could also be one of the most gentle souls out there. He could cradle a young baby as if it was his own, as if he was a mother caring for her newborn.

He soon looked back up at Arthur, humming to himself.

"I have no idea, to be honest. Probably a bit before sunset though. I know her and she does love shopping."

Arthur glanced at the window. “That should be in an hour or so, I estimate. If she’s not back by then, I’ll go and look for her whilst you guard the children.”

He was genuinely concerned that someone out there might want to hurt either Madeline or the babies, just because of what he and Alfred had done. He couldn’t help but wonder how Alfred’s parents had reacted to the news of the two of them together… he could only hope that it wasn’t bad. He wanted Alfred to have a family.

Alfred just nodded.

"Yeah, that might be for the best." He knew that it would be important to keep Madeline safe. If she was harmed in any way and his parents learnt of it, they would have more to deal with than just Albion. No...they would have to deal with Columbia as well.

He didn't want to go through with that. Not only that but he loved his sister so much...he could never wish her any harm.

He simply hoped that she was safe.

What his parents thought about him was something that worried him more than anything. He knew they were usually fair and just...but he had no idea if it was the same in this case.

Arthur honestly doubted that Alfred’s parents would have taken it well. They were certainly kinder people than Arthur’s parents but they were likely to have the same narrow-minded opinions on things that were forbidden.

Though he was fairly certain that they would not try to put Alfred to death. Though he could have been wrong.

William settled in Arthur’s arms again as the man sat on the edge of the bed. He still felt a little frazzled from being unable to get the twins to stop crying earlier. He felt peculiar, actually.

When Alfred really thought about it, he could imagine that his parents wouldn't really take it all that well. He knew that they loved him with all of his heart but at the same time, they've been holding the same ideals that his ancestors have held. They had strong faith in their religion, which condemned people like Arthur and himself quite strongly. He was certain that even his own position in the royal family would save him from punishment of something so 'terrible' and 'blasphemous'.

He just smiled a bit when he saw William, finally relaxing. He soon reached over to rub Arthur's back lightly, pressing a kiss to his shoulder.

Soon enough the sound of the door opening caught Alfred's attention and his blue eyes brightened as he realised who was coming in. He smiled over at Arthur.

"I think that's Madeline. I'll go get her." Carrying the baby girl in his arms, he soon headed down so he could bring Madeline to follow him so all three of them could sit down and actually talk more.

Arthur just nodded, watching the younger man leave and start to head for the door. He exhaled slowly and nuzzled William, who gurgled for attention in his arms. He kissed the baby's cheek and held him close in strong, protective arms as he stood up. He followed Alfred down the stairs, somewhat more tentative, prepared to grab his sword if he needed to.

He waited at the foot of the stairs, brow furrowed in anticipation of the door opening. He hoped to God that it was Madeleine. He loved the children, he did. He just felt weary, having watched them all day.
